How to Write Better AI Prompts (Beginner's Guide with Examples)

6 min read ·

Have you ever asked an AI tool a question and got a boring, generic answer? The problem usually isn't the AI. It's the prompt.

A prompt is the instruction you give an AI tool. Better prompts mean better answers. Writing great prompts is a simple skill anyone can learn in 10 minutes.

The 5-part prompt formula: R-T-C-F-T

  1. Role: Who should the AI act as? "You are an experienced HR manager."
  2. Task: What exactly do you want? "Review my resume."
  3. Context: What background does it need? "I'm a B.Com fresher applying for accounts jobs in Pune."
  4. Format: How should the answer look? "Give me 5 bullet points of feedback."
  5. Tone: What style? "Be honest but encouraging."

You don't need all five every time, but the more you include, the better the result.

Before and after examples

Writing an email

✗ Weak: "Write a leave email."

✓ StrongWrite a short, polite email to my manager asking for leave on 24 and 25 October for my cousin's wedding in Jaipur. I've finished my pending report. Keep it professional and under 80 words.

Business marketing

✗ Weak: "Write an Instagram post for my shop."

✓ StrongYou are a social media expert. Write 3 Instagram captions for my home bakery in Lucknow announcing a Diwali sweets box at ₹499. Make them warm and festive, use 2–3 emojis, and end each with a call to order on WhatsApp.

Learning

✗ Weak: "Explain inflation."

✓ StrongExplain inflation to a Class 11 commerce student using an example of vegetable prices in India. Keep it under 150 words and end with one question to test me.

7 tips for better prompts

  1. Be specific. Add numbers, names, places and limits like word count.
  2. Give examples. Show a sample of the style you want.
  3. Ask for a format. Tables, bullet points, steps or a short paragraph.
  4. Break big tasks into steps. Ask for an outline first, then each section.
  5. Ask follow-up questions. "Make it shorter", "More formal", "Give 3 more options".
  6. Let AI ask you questions. End with: "Ask me any questions you need before you start."
  7. Say what to avoid. "Don't use difficult words" or "No bullet points".
